Process Priority Optimizer Overview
Process Priority Optimizer is a process priority optimizer for Windows NT/XP/Vista/7 x86 and x64 systems through psapi.dll.
Main features
- Simple and easy to use
- Automatically adjust applications execution priorities based on user preference (set and save process priority)
- Automatically shutdown unwanted applications/processes
- Set and save processes CPU affinity
- Anti-LockUp: automatically withdraw CPU time from aggressive processes
- Shutdown processes automatically at a given date-time
- Transparently boost performance
- Uses only ~12MBs of memory and very little CPU time
- Win32 and Win64 version
Requirements
- Windows NT/Windows XP
- DirectX9 and a compatible 3D GFX card
Overwiew
The default setings should be ok for a regular user.
Setting the optimizing cycle lower will react to boosting mechanism only.
Setting the managing profiles refresh to smaller value speeds up the auto-set class priorities task.
Optimizing cycle timing also affects the Anti-LockUp (automatic priority class lowering function) reaction speed.
The managing profiles is the list-.
Having fewer them on the list will fasten the managing profiles refresh rate a bit.
Having the window minimized also speeds up the refresh cycle becouse the display isn't needed to update.
You can use the middle mouse button on the tray icon to turn on/off PPO's optimization and profiles refreshing cycles, the priorities will be stalled at the value when you clicked.
This is advised for games, etc.
This way you can turn PPO on or off with one single click always.
Optimize cycle is on averege 2-3ms.
Refresh cycle is on average 10-15ms.
Use these values (measured from 1.5GHz CPU) when calculating your settings.
Also you can check in Task Manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL) the Total CPU Time PPO takes (Menu:View/Select Columns... then check CPU Time) compared to total system uptime: System Idle Process.
Examples for usage
- Automatically set your video grabber app. to Real Time to prevent frame drops
- Automatically set CPU hungry processes (MP3, AVI encoding) to Idle to keep the systems responsiveness and do other things in the meantime
- Automatically kill suspicios processes, that YOU think is suspicios
- You can use an inverted logic and set all processes that consume too much CPU to Lower then Normal priority and use the Boost Foreground option with Normal priority class to make them Normal when have the focus
Don't forget to save your settings: Menu:File/Save Settings... after you have made the changes!
