Direct Stream Recording

With MP4 Stream Editor's direct stream recording it is possible to record to various compressed and uncompressed audio formats.
You can use a timer to start and stop recording at a specified time, or use Volume Level Activation to record automatically when a specified loudness is detected. You save the sounds in MP3, Flac or WMA etc. format directly, conserving time and disk space (more then 5 times longer audio files with same size - this depends on encoding settings or half the files size and same quality with Flac for example).

Select a sound device (Direct Sound or WASAPI) and an input source if using Direct Sound. If the device is initialized successfully you can see the input sound's FFT graphic. Carefully adjust the input volume to avoid clipping. Clipping means that the sound is louder then the device's sampling resolution range which introduces distortion when recording. If clipping is detected a 'Clipping! Reduce volume!' warning will appear above the FFT/volume slider. Lower the volume till this warning never appears.
Specify recording's audio format, frequency of 48 000Hz is a good choice, number of channels 1 - mono, 2 - stereo, select an encoding preset, you can use the Settings... to set the encoding parameters as you like, and a file name and you can start recording.

If you vant to visualise the input while recording or want to add DSP effects to it, add the recording channel to the stream list with the 'Add...' button. The recording channel will appear on the stream list which you can control with the mixer's channel control panel. If you don't want to add the recording channel to the stream list, you can start recording with simply clicking on the 'Record' button.

Volume Level Activation: Monitor the volume level with the gauge and move the slider up to a position when the volume level is as loud that you want to start recording. With the 'Hold time' specify how long to record after the specified volume was detected and the recording was started. If in the specified time interval the activation volume level is detected again, the counter is re-set and starts counting again from the specified 'Hold time'.

WASAPI loopback recording: It is possible with WASAPI to record a specified application's audio output. You can record for example youtube's audio simply by selecting the browser from the WASAPI device list, or any other application's audio this way.

You can close the window and continue you work while recording.
