Sample display - stream editor window

The sample display is where you can edit MP3 and the supported audio files graphically with the mouse on a 3D sample display.
MPEG and the decodelessly editable audio files are edited without decoding, this means there is no degradation of quality and it's also very fast, as there is no need to decode and re-encode the files.

Selection start position can be set with left mouse button click, end position with right mouse button click. Point to a position and roll the mousewheel up to zoom in and down to zoom out.
You can play the stream from the position where you click with the middle mouse button.
If the opened stream has subsongs, selecting a subsong on the stream list will adjust the selection on the sample display that matches the subsong.

Commands (above sample display)
  • Bit rates/Waveform/Sonogram button: Switch between sample waveform view, bit rates graph (MPEG only) and Sonogram display mode. The audio stream can be edited (cut/copy/paste etc.) in any mode.
  • Scroll check box: If checked and the sample display is zoomed in, playback position will scroll the sample to keep the current playback position in view.
  • Amplitude track bar: Adjust the sample amplitude. Useful for silent audio files.
  • + Cut button: Adds the selection to the cut list. Useful if you want to create a new file from multiple parts of the opened audio file (or multiple audio files). Works decodelessly with MPEG (MP3), MP4, Ogg Vorbis, Opus and DSD audio files, other formats are decoded and can encoded to any of the supported formats.
  • Subsongs check box: Toggle visibility of subsongs.
  • + Seek button: Add a new subsong from selection starting position. Optionally specify end position with selection end position. This will pop-up a dialog with options to set artist, title, etc. for the new subsong. Use the menu: File/Save Subsong Layout to save the subsong layout or menu: File/Generate .CUE Sheet. Subsongs are stored in ID3v2 tag, so only audio file formats support subsongs which can have ID3v2 tags like MP3, MP2, Flac (not recommended), WAV and DSD, .CUE file is generated aside the audio file with the same name but with .CUE extension. An exising subsong's position can be moved with left mouse clicking on a subsong and dragging it with the mouse. Right mouse button clicking on a subsongs deletes it.
  • Zoom sel button: Zoom to view selection 'full screen'.
  • Select all button: Select whole audio file. Sets selection starting position to 0 and selection end position to the end of the audio.
  • View all button: Zoom out to view audio file's whole sample.

Control panel (right to sample display)
  • Start frame: Selection start position in MPEG frames for MPEG files and sample number for other audio file formats. Below it you can see the converted values to time.
  • End frame: Selection end position in MPEG frames for MPEG files and sample number for other audio file formats. Below it you can see the converted values to time. You can use the 'Start frame' and 'End frame' lebels to click to quickly set the selection to beginning and at end.
  • With the channel control icons you can (in order from left to right): play all, pause/continue playing, stop playing, preview paste, play selection, preview cut. You can specify in settings: MP3 tab how long the preview should be (default is 6 seconds).
  • Selection's length display shows the selection length in time.
  • Selection's size display shows the selection's estimated size in bytes.
  • Mouse cursor position display shows the time value where the mouse is pointing on the sample dispaly when hovered with the mouse.

Main menu items

Menu items that appear when the sample display is displayed, for the main menu items see main window menu items.

File
  • Open: Same as clicking Sample above the stream list: Open a file for editing with sample display.
  • Close: Close the current loaded stream (close sample display).
  • Close All: Close all loaded streams.
  • Save As...: Save the current audio stream to a new file. You will be prompted for a file format. Use the preset 'MPEG frame copy' to save MPEG (MP3, MP2) files without re-encoding.
  • Save Subsong Layout: Save changes to the subsongs into the stream's ID3v2 tag. Subsongs are stored in ID3v2 tag, so only audio file formats support subsongs which can have ID3v2 tags like MP3, MP2, Flac (not recommended), WAV or DSD formats. Subsongs have the advantage of supporting basically any tag information supported by the ID3v2 specs, even different cover arts for every subsong. Subsongs are only supported by MP4 Stream Editor.
  • Generate .CUE Sheet: Build a .CUE sheet file from subsongs. File will be saved beside the audio file, file name will be the same as the stream's but with .CUE extension. .CUE sheets have the advantage that they are supported for any audio file format and also by other software. The limitation is that just a few information like artist, album and title are possible.
